Magical Teaching Moment

Magical Teaching Moment

As you read a text with a text with your students, have them become the illustrator!
You can do this with nonfiction and fiction texts. Take the text and break into 3 parts- beginning, middle and end. As you read the text or have students read the text- have them draw a picture about the text in the separate boxes. At the end, you can have them draw a summary or write a summary about the text. I also have my students include a text connect- text to self, text to text or text to world.
Check it out here: Youbetheillustrator

Here are some of the texts that I use with this strategy:
It Happened in Utah by Gayen and Tom Wharton
Coyote Steals the Blanket (Ute) by Janet Stevens
Mountain Men: True Grit and Tall Tales by Andrew Glass
Baseball Saved Us by Ken Mochizuki
The Bracelet by Yoshiko Uchida
Lillian's Right to Vote: A Celebration of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 by Jonah Winter and Shane W Evans
