My Top Five Favorite Youtube Videos for Utah Studies

My Top Five Favorite Youtube Videos

1. How to Know if a Source is Reliable by Shmoop- Teaching students how to tell is a source is reliable or not? This video is just around 6 minutes and covers the basics. I use this in my first unit on Historian Skills.

2. Spanish Flu- Nova ScienceNow Video about the 1918 Flu- Need a great way to combine Science and Utah Studies? This is a fascinating video about the Spanish Flu and how scientists are studying the flu to help with current diseases. I pair this with this news article- Living History: During WWI and a chapter from It Happened in Utah.  I use this video in my WWI unit.

3.  Checks and Balances by FLVS Civics: Foundations Checks and Balances-  My students ALWAYS struggle with understanding checks and balances! This video can be used as an intro or as a review. FLVS Civics also has other great clips on civics, and are worth checking out. I use this video in my Government unit.

4. How to Dance: The Charleston- In the spring, I try to find more ways for my students to have interactive and more movement type of lessons. Learning the Charleston was a great way to include movement and a break during a long block period! I use this video in my Roaring 20s unit.

5. Andrews Sisters Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy- This is one of my favorite videos that I use for my WWII Life on the Homefront unit. Students love analyzing the lyrics and we talk about key concepts about what was life like in the U.S. at the time. One of the music teachers at my school even teamed up with me and had the school choir sing this song!

As you read a text with a text with your students, have them become the illustrator!
You can do this with nonfiction and fiction texts. Take the text and break into 3 parts- beginning, middle and end. As you read the text or have students read the text- have them draw a picture about the text in the separate boxes. At the end, you can have them draw a summary or write a summary about the text. I also have my students include a text connect- text to self, text to text or text to world.

Here are some of the texts that I use with this strategy:
It Happened in Utah by Gayen and Tom Wharton
Coyote Steals the Blanket (Ute) by Janet Stevens
Mountain Men: True Grit and Tall Tales by Andrew Glass
Baseball Saved Us by Ken Mochizuki
The Bracelet by Yoshiko Uchida
Lillian's Right to Vote: A Celebration of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 by Jonah Winter and Shane W Evans
